U.S.-based steel tube manufacturer AK Tube opened a US$ 10 million plant in Queretaro, its first facility abroad.

The new site will manufacture tubes for exhaust systems aiming to supply the automotive industry located in the Northeast and Center regions of Mexico.

Over the next three months the facility will hire up to 70 workers to process around 13,000 tons of tube yearly.

The company has targeted assembly plants in Saltillo, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Puebla and Toluca as part of its business plan, according to Ed Urbaniak, AK Tube president.

AK Tube is a AK Steel subsidiary which operates three manufacturing sites located in Indiana and Ohio.
