The launch of the all-new, second-generation GMC Terrain is well under way with the firsts units, which last month began to roll out of the GM San Luis Potosi assembly plant, starting to arrive at dealer lots across North America.
Test drives were offered to several media outlets in recent days at a GM location in Pennsylvania, where the Terrain caught the attention of journalists with its “refinement, comfort and performance,” according to Cars.com.
The vehicle rides on an all-new architecture — GM’s D2 platform — and features all-new exterior, interior, and powertrain family. Compared to the outgoing model, the all-new Terrain is more fuel efficient and lighter thanks to its platform and all-new powertrain lineup. It’s also slightly smaller in exterior dimensions while maintaining the interior space of the first-gen model.
The Terrain will be offered with three new turbocharged engines. The two gas variants are a 1.5-liter four-cylinder with 170 horsepower and 201 pound-feet of torque or a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Both are paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission which is also build at San Luis Potosi.
The third choice is a 1.6-liter diesel engine with 137 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque paired to a six-speed automatic transmission.
The 2018 GMC Terrain starts at US$ 31,995, including freight, for the SLE front-drive model (a drop of US$ 1,605) and tops out with the full-zoot, all-wheel-drive Denali at US$ 43,495, which is, again, down US$ 3,580 compared to the 2017 model.
