French developer Neoen wins largest solar project in Mexico’s third clean energy auction

French renewable energy developer Neoen announced it has been awarded a 377MW solar photovoltaic project in Mexico’s third clean energy auction. The project in the state of Aguascalientes is due to be connected to the grid in June 2020.

According to Mexico’s National Centre for Energy Control (CENACE) which organized the call for tenders, the average price of the successful tenders was US$ 20.57/MWh, which makes Mexico the most competitive market in Latin America for renewable energy.

Among the winners, the Neoen power plant is the largest renewable energy plant and offers one of the lowest prices, in line with the company’s mission to “produce the most competitive renewable energy on a sustainable, large-scale basis,” said the company in a press release.

Lionel Bony, Neoen Mexico and Central America manager, explained that “the continuing fall in the price of renewable energy in Mexico is a sign of the success of energy reform in its ability to attract investments and ultimately reduce the price of electricity for all Mexicans. At a time when world CO2 emissions are once more on the up, these prices are also encouraging news for the climate and are proof of Mexico’s leading role in this field.”
