Bosch opens US$ 80 million automotive steering plant in Queretaro

Bosch, the world's largest supplier of automotive components, inaugurated in Queretaro its first production plant for automotive steering components in Mexico.

The 15,000-square-meter (160,000-square-foot) facility was installed in the Aerotech Industrial Park, in the municipality of Colon, with an investment of US$ 80 million and the opening of 500 jobs by 2020, with further growth planned.

The facility will initially assemble three products for passenger cars: manual-adjust steering columns and two variants of electric power steering, Servolectric column type and Servolectric dual pinion. Servolectric by Automotive Steering enables driver assistance functions and helps to reduce the vehicle’s fuel consumption. The production of this technology marks the first time that Bosch is producing this innovative steering system in Mexico.

"This is the first plant in Mexico for the Robert Bosch Automotive Steering division, with its construction we confirm once again our confidence in Mexico, bringing new divisions and creating new business opportunities," said René Schlegel, president of Robert Bosch Mexico.

Over the last 10 years, Bosch has invested more than US$ 400 million in Mexico. Over the next few years, investment and employment in the country will significantly increase; between 2016 and 2020 Bosch will invest a total of US$ 500 million at different sites in Mexico, enabling the company to meet the growing demand for the manufacture of new high-tech automotive products for the Americas. This investment is expected to generate up to 5,000 new jobs over the same period.

Bosch has had a presence in Mexico since 1955. In 2014, it had sales of US$ 988 million U.S. Over the past 10 years, Bosch’s Mexican workforce more than doubled to 13,000 associates by April 2015. All four Bosch business sectors – Mobility Solutions, Industrial Technology, Consumer Goods, and Energy and building Technology – are represented in Mexico.

The company has 12 manufacturing facilities in the country, including the new Queretaro plant, where it produces automotive components, power tools, security systems, drive and control systems, engineering solutions, and thermotechnology. The largest plants are situated in Toluca, State of Mexico, and Juarez, Chihuahua.
