U.S. representatives involved in the NAFTA renegotiation aim to reach a deal in principle with Canada and Mexico in the next three weeks, CNBC reported today citing as sources congressional aides and industry executives who have been briefed by the Trump administration.

According to the news outlet, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer told lawmakers “to allow two weeks for high-level talks to conclude, and an additional two weeks for the fine print to be hammered out. A senior administration official confirmed that this was the timing the U.S. expected”.

Lighthizer, Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland and Mexican Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo will meet in Washington on April 19 and 20 for the second set of in-person meetings the top trade negotiators have held in the U.S. this month.
