Here’s how US sales of Mexico-made vehicles ended up in May

Demand of light trucks reflected in sales of some Mexico-made models in May with three-digit and two-digit growing rates for the Jeep Compass and the Dodge Journey respectively.

There were also cases in which the sale of some SUVs seemed to start to cool off, as is the case of the Audi Q5, whose sales were flat compared to the previous year.

Worth noting, however, is the case for the Kia Forte, which despite being a compact passenger car was the brand’s best-selling vehicle above crossovers and SUVs such as the Sportage and the Sorento.

The following report does not necessary reflects that each vehicle sold from certain model was built in Mexico, as marked in those particular cases. Automakers constantly mix domestic and overseas supplies from several countries to meet U.S. demand.

Audi

Audi of America reported May sales of 19,315 vehicles, a marginal increase of 0.6% compared to total sales of same month in 2017. Audi’s year-to-date sales through May totaled 88,471 units, an increase of 5.9% compared to the same five months of 2017.

The Q5 SUV made in Puebla remained as Audi’s best-selling model in the United States on sales of 4,918 units, which means more than one in four vehicles sold by the German automaker in May was a Q5, although it represented a flat result compared to the 4,909 units sold in May 2017. Year-to-date sales of the Q5 totaled 24,223 vehicles, an increase of 14% compared to the same five-month period of 2017.

FCA

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US (FCA) reported sales of 214,294 vehicles in May 2018, an 11% increase compared with sales of 193,040 vehicles in May 2017. Year-to-date sales are now of 913,212 units, up 4%.

FCA sold 17,327 Jeep Compass last month, an increase of 223% compared to the 5,363 units the company sold in May 2017, which was the second complete month of sales for the SUV. Year-to-date sales are now of 72,368 vehicles.

Sales of the Fiat 500 were of just 264 units in May and 1,908 vehicles on a year-to-date basis, representing drops of 79% and 70% respectively. Sales of the Dodge Journey hiked 37% in May to 10,966 units, but its year-to-date results are still down 19% to 41,023 vehicles during the first five months of 2018. All three vehicles are built at FCA’s plant in Toluca.

MexicoNow will no longer report sales on RAM pickups, as the new generation of light trucks is starting to appear in the US showrooms. However, such new version will not be manufactured in Mexico.

Ford

Overall Ford Motor Company U.S. sales for May totaled 242,824 vehicles, a marginal gain of 0.7% compared to same month of 2017. Year-to-date sales were of 1,047,056 units, down 2.4%.

The Ford Fiesta saw its sales hike 22.2% to 5,110 units in May, while its year-to-date sales totaled 20,559 vehicles, just five units more compared to same five-month period of 2017. Sales of the Ford Fusion sank 29.4% to 15,253 vehicles, while its year-do-date sales were of 71,300 units, down 20%.

The Lincoln MKZ saw a 35.7% drop in sales of 1,800 units in May and a decline of 35.1% to 7,851 vehicles in a year-to-date basis. Both the Fusion and the MKZ are built in Hermosillo, Sonora, while the Ford Fiesta for the U.S. market is sourced from Cuautitlan Izcalli, state of Mexico.

General Motors announced in March that it would cease monthly sales reports in favor of quarterly reports. Its next sales report will be published in the first days of July.

Honda

Honda Motor Co. reported U.S. May sales of 153,069 Honda and Acura vehicles, a 3.1% increase versus May 2017. Year-to-date sales are down 1.7% to 641,261 units. Sales of the Honda Fit totaled 4,976 units in May, down 2.5%. Its year-to-date sales are down 7.4% to 20,254 vehicles.

The HR-V saw an 8% decrease in sales of 8,773 units. Its year-to-date sales totaled 36,898 vehicles, which represents an 2.3% drop. The Honda Fit is built in Celaya, Guanajuato, while the HR-V is manufactured in Celaya but also in El Salto, Jalisco.

Kia

Kia Motors America announced May sales of 59,462 vehicles, a 1.6% increase over the same month last year. Year-to-date sales totaled 236,992 units, which represents a 1.08% decrease. Its sister brand Hyundai reported May sales of 66,056 units, up 10%. Its year-to-date deliveries of 270,996 vehicles represent a 7.1% decline.

Sales of the Kia Rio totaled 2,181 units, meaning an 83.7% hike. Year-to-date sales totaled 9,170 units, up 60.2%. The Kia Forte was the brand’s best-selling vehicle in May with 11,261 units delivered, up 1.6% compared to last year. Its year-to-date sales totaled 44,191 vehicles, representing a 6.7% decline.

Sales of the Hyundai Accent totaled 2,471 units in May, while the year-to-date figure was of 12,705 vehicles. Since last August, the Accent is built in Pesqueria, Nuevo Leon along with the Kia Rio and the Forte.

Mazda

Mazda North American Operations reported May U.S. sales of 29,980 vehicles, representing an increase of 15.1% versus May of last year. Year-to-date sales through May are up 14.9% versus last year, with 137,031 vehicles sold.

Sales of the Mazda3 in sedan and hatchback versions totaled 5,983 units, representing a drop of 11.7%. Year-to-date deliveries reached 30,363 vehicles, which represents an 9% decline. Both versions of the Mazda3 for the U.S. market are sourced from Salamanca, Guanajuato.

Infiniti

Nissan Group announced total U.S. sales for May of 131,832 units, a decrease of 4.1% compared to the previous year. Year-to-date sales totaled 635,599 vehicles, down 6%. Sales of the Nissan Versa, including both sedan and hatchback versions, were 27% down to 6,576 units in May. Year-to-date sales decreased 21.6% to 37,939 vehicles.

The Nissan Sentra saw its sales drop 1.5% to 18,103 units in May, while its year-to-date deliveries are still 5.6% higher than last year to 95,104 vehicles. With its second full month of sales at Infiniti retailers, the all-new 2019 QX50 built in Aguascalientes totaled 1,859 deliveries in May for a total 3,272 vehicles sold in the year so far.

Toyota

Toyota reported U.S. May 2018 sales of 215,321 vehicles, a decrease of 1.3% compared to May 2017. Its year-to-date sales are 2.8% up to 979,710 units.

Sales of the Yaris iA, which is built by Mazda at its Guanajuato plant, decreased 16.9% to 2,861 vehicles. Year-to-date sales are 14.8% down to 13,430 units. Sales of the Toyota Tacoma midsize pickup, built in Tijuana and San Antonio, Texas, hiked 21.1% to 21,380 units in May, and 20.2% in a year-to-date basis to 93,970 vehicles.

Volkswagen

Volkswagen reported sales of 31,211 units delivered in May, an increase of 4% over same month of 2017. With 143,957 units delivered year-to-date in 2018, the German automaker is reporting an 7.5% increase in year-over-year sales.

Sales of the Golf family declined 44.1% to 4,027 units, and 36% in a year-to-date basis to 20,705 vehicles. All variants of the Golf family are built in Puebla, except for the e-Golf and the R-Line, which are made in Germany.

Sales of the Jetta totaled 6,821 units, while year-to-date deliveries were of 25,784 vehicles, down 40.9% and 43.3% respectively. Sales of the Beetle totaled 1,492 units, down 18.4%. Year-to-date sales totaled 6,839 vehicles, which represented a decline of 5.5%.

Sales of the all-new 2018 Tiguan, which entered the U.S. market last August, totaled 8,579 units and is once again the brand’s best-selling model. Year-to-date sales are now of 38,314 vehicles.
