Audi plant in Puebla starts three-day halt for retooling, head of the union says

The production at Audi Mexico will stop for three days, starting today and until Saturday, due to a retooling process to manufacture a new version of the Q5 SUV.
According to Alvaro Lopez Vazquez, head of the union, the idle of operations will affect 60% of the more than 4,000 workers, who have the option to take vacations or stay to receive training while the adjustments take place.
Lopez explained that between Thursday and Friday the three shifts will be suspended, while Saturday there will be two idled shifts. The intention, he said, is to adjust the production lines to manufacture 10,000 units of the new version whose features will soon be announced.
Currently the production of the plant located in San Jose Chiapa, Puebla, is 650 cars a day on average, a figure that will change for next year with the launch of a hybrid version that will be added to the armored and the new version that will begin to be manufactured.
For this year, Audi aims to produce 180,000 units, 21,450 more than in 2017, its first full year of operations.
According to figures from the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA), until the first half of the year, Audi’s year-to-date production was of 94,888 units, representing 48% of the goal for this year.
