All-new Chevrolet Silverado claims largest bed in its segment

General Motors has claimed that the all-new 2019 Silverado 1500 pickup features the biggest standard bed in its class, hence “the most functional of any pickup”.

“The bed is the heart and soul of any pickup, so we made several improvements to the bed of the all-new Silverado to give our customers an even better hauling experience,” said Tim Herrick, executive chief engineer, Full-Size Trucks, General Motors. “We’ve added so many features and benefits that it deserves its own name – Durabed.”

For 2019, Chevrolet increased cargo volume in every option. From 53 cubic feet to 63 cubic feet in the short box, 62 cubic feet to 72 in the standard box, and from 75 cubic feet to 89 in the long box.

The short-box’s volume is up to 20% more than any competitor’s short-box. Most of that increase was achieved by widening the maximum width of the bed floor nearly 10% (seven inches), which is implemented across all three bed sizes.

That makes its 63 cubic-foot short box bigger than both the 2019 F-150 (52.8 cubic feet) and 2019 Ram 1500 (53.9 cubic feet). Its 72 cubic-foot standard box also compares favorably (62.3 cubic feet and 61.5 cubic feet, respectively), as does the 89 cubic-foot long box, which is 77.4 cubic feet in the 2019 F-150 (the Ram doesn't offer a long box).

Crew cab versions of both Silverado and GMC Sierra (with four large doors) are built in Silao, Guanajuato while regular and double cab pickups are made in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
