Volkswagen celebrated the production of 12 million vehicles at its assembly plant in Puebla, Mexico, a milestone that was met with a habanero orange Tiguan SUV.

"The production of 12 million vehicles is a sample of our global reach. For over fifty years, our vehicles have reached millions of customers in virtually every corner of the world, from Asia to Africa, and Europe. Our considerable volume, longevity and success producing vehicles here, in Puebla, has placed Volkswagen de México as something more than a regional subsidiary," said Volkswagen Mexico Executive Board President, Steffen Reiche in a statement.

The facility, inaugurated in 1967, employs more than 14,000 people and exports more than 80% of its production to 120 countries around the world.

Tiguan production began in the first quarter of 2017 and to date more than 200,000 units have left the plant. In addition to the Tiguan, the Puebla facility produces the all-new Jetta, as well as the Golf and the Beetle in different versions.
