UNITED STATES - NASA reported that the Ingenuity Mars helicopter mission ended after exceeding expectations and performing dozens of additional flights than planned.

Although the helicopter remains operational and in communication with controllers on the ground, images sent to Earth this week indicated that one or more of its rotor blades were damaged during landing and it is no longer capable of flight.

"Ingenuity's historic journey, the first helicopter on another planet, came to an end," said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.

"Through missions like Ingenuity, NASA is paving the way for future flights in our solar system and smarter, safer human exploration to Mars and beyond," he added.

Ingenuity Mars became the first aircraft to fly outside of Earth, overcoming the major challenge of operating in the atmosphere of Mars and achieving speeds of up to 36 kilometers per hour. In total, the aircraft performed a total of 72 flights on the red planet.

"Ingenuity completed its last flight on January 18, 2024 and 7 days later the completion of its mission was announced, leaving hundreds of records and a great story to tell," the organization noted.
