Mexicali introduces first electric taxis as part of a sustainable mobility project

Mexicali has put the first electric taxis in the state of Baja California into service as part of a project promoted by a local company and supported by state authorities. In this initial stage, four electric radio taxi units are operating, with the aim of moving toward a cleaner and more efficient transportation system.

During the launch of the project, Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda pointed out that the state capital is becoming a national pioneer in the use of this type of transportation, in line with initiatives for environmental protection and modernization of public services.

The vehicles incorporated are BYD Dolphin Mini 2026 models, which do not emit polluting gases, require less energy consumption, and are adapted to the region’s climatic conditions, according to the State Institute of Sustainable Mobility.

The director of the institute, Jorge Alberto Gutiérrez Topete, indicated that the project is being developed in coordination with the State Energy Commission and the Ministry of Economy, which are working on the installation of charging infrastructure to facilitate the adoption of more electric units.

On behalf of the operating company Electricab, its representative José Roa Aguilera reported that the fleet is expected to expand to seven units by the end of July and reach 50 in a second phase. The service will operate via a radio base, with competitive rates derived from lower operating costs.

State authorities have indicated that this initiative is part of a strategy to reduce the use of fossil fuels in transportation and promote technologies with a lower environmental impact.
