Auto dealers in Mexico sold 141,963 light vehicles in December for a total of 1,421,458 units throughout the year, which represents drops of 10.7% and 7.1%, respectively, compared to same periods of 2017.

On a yearly basis, Ford and FCA saw their sales decline at two-digit rates of 15.8% and 12.7%, respectively, while GM deliveries fell 8.7%.

Nissan sales dropped 14.4%, but the Japanese automaker is still the best-selling brand by volume with a 22% share of total deliveries, followed by GM with 16.6%, and Volkswagen with 13.8%. The German automaker posted a 16% decline on yearly sales, including its subsidiaries SEAT, Audi, Porsche and Bentley.

Brands with sales increases were KIA with 8.7%; Hyundai, 7.5%; Mazda, 7.3%; and Toyota, 3.1%.

Factors such as the renegotiation of NAFTA and the presidential elections caused a loss of confidence among consumers and kept them away from the car agencies.

With one exception, however, the premium market was not affected at all, as shown by the figures of BMW and Mercedes-Benz, who reported double-digit sales increases of 15.1% and 16%, respectively.

Audi, on the other hand, posted a 18% drop.
