Mexico is preparing its power grid for data centers

Mexico will strengthen its electrical infrastructure planning for data centers in light of the industry’s projected expansion, after the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and the Mexican Data Center Association (MEXDC) established a coordination framework to prioritize the energy requirements of new projects. The industry currently has 279 MW of installed capacity, with an additional 205 MW under construction this year, and is projecting a demand of 1.73 GW by 2031.

Under the agreement, MEXDC will share consolidated information with the CFE regarding new projects, expansion prospects, and electricity consumption profiles. This data will help identify load requirements, thereby enabling the development of generation, transmission, distribution, and storage solutions tailored to the needs of each project, based on its location and characteristics.

The development of cloud services, artificial intelligence, and intensive data processing increases the capacity needs of data centers and requires more energy infrastructure. The agreement between CFE and MEXDC establishes a coordinated plan to oversee the development of data centers and organize the necessary infrastructure before the projects begin operations.
