Movement of containers grows 10.6% in Mexican ports

MEXICO — During the first month of 2019, Mexican ports increased their container movement of 20 feet (TEU) by 10.6%, reaching a total of 586,436 units, compared to 530,154 units in the same month of 2018.

According to CoordinaciĂłn General de Puertos y Marina Mercante, Pacific ports managed to operate 400,859 TEU, which represents an increase of 6.1% depending upon the 377,937 of January of the previous year.

In said litoral, Manzanillo handled 248,021 containers, 3.7% more than the previous 239,082; while Lázaro Cárdenas grew 6.9% with 117,883 in January of this year, compared to 110,321 of the same month of the previous year.

On the other hand, SecretarĂ­a de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT) reported that in the Gulf of Mexico the ports moved 185,577 TEU, which translates into an increase of 21.9% compared to the 152,217 of January 2018.

In that sense, Veracruz registered an increase of 21.8% with the operation of 91,935 containers, against 75,491 of January of the previous year; while Altamira handled 75,111 units, 15.8% more than the 64,835 of the same January year against year.
