Italian tire manufacturer Pirelli has begun operations earlier than originally planned at its second production plant in Mexico, aiming to increase 20% its total output, or 1 million units, by the end of year.

Interviewed by local media, Tomas Gravalos, CEO of Pirelli in Mexico, said that at the beginning of the month the first tires rolled out of the second plant located in Guanajuato Puerto Interior, in which US$ 200 million were invested.

"The construction of the industrial building has been completed. We continue to install machinery, however, the facility started operations and we are doing very well," he told the AM paper.

Regarding the equipment, he said that those are modern manufacturing systems designed and manufactured by the Italian tire company itself. "They are the most modern machines of our team and they are helping us a lot in production," he added.

Gravalos said that the recruitment began weeks ago, and while the hiring process is concluded, they are supported by personnel from the other plant.

The goal is to produce one million tires more than last year, when the volume amounted to 5 million. To fulfill this purpose, production started earlier than expected, as demand for Pirelli products continues to rise.

The company produces several models in Guanajuato, but the P Zero and Scorpion series are the largest in volume, which are currently exported to 40 countries, a figure that will most likely continue to increase, the executive said.

To date, Pirelli employs about 2,000 workers in both plants and it is estimated that 360 more will be hired during the rest of the year.

Although the manager did not want to give more details, it is known that, in addition to retailers, the company supplies directly to a wide list of automakers such as Ford, Mercedes Benz, Audi, Tesla, Volkswagen and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.
