Puerto Morelos handled 11,893 metric tons of cargo this year

The Port of Morelos handled 11,893 metric tons of cargo in the first half of 2026, a 6.4% increase from last year’s 11,181 metric tons. The Monthly Statistical Report from the Secretary of the Navy, based on preliminary data, documents this progress, making it the only growth in commercial cargo that Quintana Roo has experienced.

Of the 11,983 metric tons, 9,296 were imports, while 2,597 were exports. Imports increased by 8.5% compared to the previous year. However, exports remained nearly the same as last year.

This result contrasts with air cargo volumes, as Cancún Airport saw a 15.5% decline in the first half of the year, according to the Federal Civil Aviation Agency. Meanwhile, in the Mexican Caribbean, most high-value cargo entered through the Port of Morelos.

This port primarily serves the northern region’s hotel and commercial sectors by importing bedding, curtains, specialized equipment, and meat products. Ivan Ferat, the local representative of the Quintana Roo Port Authority, noted that at the beginning of the year, imports were growing at an annual rate of between 10 and 15 percent, which forced the port to expand and modernize.

However, Puerto Morelos does not compete in terms of volume with Manzanillo, Lázaro Cárdenas, or Veracruz, as the national overview from the Secretariat of the Navy revealed that the bulk of the country’s activity remains in the Pacific and the Gulf; nevertheless, Quintana Roo still has the dock that supplies its hotels, restaurants, and businesses.
