Although the opening of new plants is not in sight for the near future, French aerospace components manufacturer Safran is constantly growing in Mexico and for this purpose it plans to recruit 300 professionals this year, revealed in an interview with El Financiero Claude Gobenceaux, director of the Landing Systems Services division for the Americas.
After inaugurating earlier this year its third manufacturing facility in Queretaro, seventh facility overall in Mexico, Gobenceaux said that now the company is focused on expanding its relationships with small businesses that have the potential to become suppliers, since the projections of the company “are not five or ten years, but for 50 years or more”.
The company operates in Queretaro three plants that manufacture parts for turbines and landing gear, as well as three maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) centers. Meanwhile, in Chihuahua state capital, another plant manufactures 95% of the wiring for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and 75% of the wiring for the Airbus A380.
According to the official, Safran employs in Mexico around 12,000 people, which represents more than 20% of the aerospace sector workforce throughout the country. It’s worth noting, although El Financiero does not mention it, that the figure includes the employees of its subsidiary Zodiac, acquired at the beginning of the year which operates five plants in Chihuahua and four in Tijuana.
Gobenceaux said that they are already beginning to see the first results of working along with small companies, which currently provide them with general services and consumable materials, as well as machining for landing gear.
“We have supported several companies and some of these are giving excellent results despite the difficulties of entering in this sector, but it can be done and we have concrete examples,” he said.
