Last year, auto dealers in Mexico marketed 17,807 electrified vehicles for a 68.7% increase compared to total sales of 2017, revealed the Mexican Auto Industry Association citing data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography.
The aforementioned figures are the result in sales of 17,606 hybrid units, which represents a 70.6% hike compared to 10,317 hybrids sold in 2017, but also from sales of 201 fully electric cars, a figure that is 15.2% lower compared to the 237 units sold in the previous year.
It should be noted that despite the accelerated growth in sales, electrified vehicles represent only 1.25% of the 1,421,458 units marketed in the country during 2018.
More than half of sales nationwide took place in the country’s capital and the neighboring State of Mexico, with 35.1% and 15.6% of total respectively. That’s because car owners in both jurisdictions are subject to strict environmental regulations that limit the use of their vehicles, however, hybrids and electric units are exempt from these barriers.
