Sales of hybrid and electric vehicles kept its strong pace during March totaling 1,140 units, which represents an increase of 80.4% compared to the same month of 2016, data from the Mexican Auto Industry Association (AMIA) shows. Just 21 of the units were full electric models, while the resting 1,119 were hybrid units.
During the first quarter sales of low-to-zero emission vehicles totaled 2,488 units, a skyrocketing 179.6% compared to the same period of 2016.
Boosted by a program that encourages taxi drivers to acquire vehicles with hybrid and electric engines, Mexico City remains as the main market for this type of units with 42.4% of the sales taking place at the country’s capital. The neighbor State of Mexico follows far behind with 15.7%.
No other state in Mexico holds a two-digit market share. Jalisco comes third with just 5.9% and the Northern state of Nuevo Leon is fourth on the list with barely 4.7% of sales.
