MEXICO – Due to recent threats from U.S. President Donal Trump on closing the U.S.-Mexican border in the next few days, the undersecretary of Foreign Trade, Luz Maria de la Mora, warned that the closure would have negative effects.

“We hope these threats do not become a reality, because they would be very disruptive for trade,” she said during her participation in the forum organized by the San Diego Chamber of Commerce.

She indicated that they are working with many allies in the United States with the purpose of making their government see that they must collaborate in order to deal with this type of situation.

In a year, a total of US$60 billion are crossed in San Diego.

She also explained that the border situation must be carefully evaluated, since interrupting trade flows can have very negative effects on trade in the economic activities of both sides.

“They are living borders,” she said. “70% of trade in Mexico and the U.S. happens through land transport.”
