SICT publishes Rear Fender Specifications Standard

MEXICO – The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, the "Mexican Official Standard NOM-014-SCT-2-2021, Technical Specifications and Test Methods for Rear Fenders for Vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Design Weight of more than 4,536 Kg".

It will become effective 180 calendar days after its publication date in the Official Gazette of the Federation.

"For the safety of road users, it is necessary to have a regulation that establishes dimensional specifications and structural resistance of rear fenders for various vehicles, in order to reduce the number of injuries, deaths and property damage caused in accidents caused by light vehicles versus heavy vehicles that do not have rear fenders”, SICT said.

Likewise, the document states that "there is currently no regulatory provision that obliges assemblers and body manufacturers of vehicles subject to this Mexican Official Standard to install a rear bumper that provides resistance and design conditions that guarantee its effectiveness in the event of a rear-end rear-end accident.

The purpose of this Mexican Official Standard is to establish the dimensional specifications and structural resistance of rear fenders for conventional bus, conventional midibus and unitary truck type vehicles with gross vehicle design weight over 4,536 kg; as well as trailers and semi-trailers with gross vehicle weight over 4,536 kg and under 14,000 kg.
