With an investment of US$14.5 million, last week Smurfit Kappa inaugurated its third plant in Tijuana, which began operations at the end of last year. This is the 25th facility of the Ireland-based company nationwide.
Juan Carlos Meave, general manager of the SK Tijuana Folding Cardboard plant, said the company opened 250 jobs positions to start operations. The site has a production capacity of 10 million square meters, which will double in the next five years.
The new plant will serve consumption sectors such as food and beverages, electronics and tools, among others, focused in manufacturers located up to 400 kilometers south of the border, leaving the supply for the center and west region of the country in the hands of the sister plant located in Ecatepec, State of Mexico.
“This type of product, folding cardboard, was only manufactured by the plant in the State of Mexico. Now, with this plant, we help complement this service,” said Meave. “We serve manufacturers of print cartridges, door locks, almonds and dehydrated soups, among others.”
Smurfit Kappa projects an investment of US$ 50 million in Mexico for 2019, which means an increase of 41% compared to the average of US$ 35.5 million that it allocated annually during the last five years, with the northern border being one of its main areas of interest.
