Solar power installed capacity reaches 3,000 MW with investments of US$6.3-billion worth

By the end of 2018, the installed capacity of solar power in Mexico reached 3,000 megawatts (MW), which represented a growth of 1,800% compared to 2017, and involved investments for US$6.3 billion, a leader of this industry told Notimex.

According to Héctor Olea, president of the Mexican Association of Solar Energy (Asolmex), there are currently 39 solar farms in operation in 11 states of the country, including the largest plant in Latin America and the second largest in the world, located in Viesca, Coahuila.

On the other hand, the Distributed Solar Generation (solar roofs) also positioned, since by the end of 2018 more than 85,000 contracts had been installed nationwide.

According to the consultancy firm PwC, the installed capacity will exceed 6,000 MW by 2024, which is equivalent to the electricity needed to meet the demand of 1.2 million households in the country.
