The General Satellite Directorate is created

MEXICO - The Agency for Digital Transformation and Telecommunications (ATDT) led by José Antonio Peña Merino, announced the creation of a General Satellite Directorate, which will assume the responsibilities of the Mexican Space Agency (AEM) and the Mexican Satellite System (MEXSAT), after the resignation of Salvador Landeros Ayala, general director of AEM.

Through a press release, the ATDT informed that one of the main purposes of this Agency is to “unify the Government's technological capabilities aimed at generating autonomy and developing its own solutions”.

To this end, the General Satellite Directorate was created, which will integrate the attributions of the AEM and MEXSAT, as established in the ATDT's Internal Regulations.

“In this way, the powers of the AEM do not disappear, but are strengthened by linking them with the capabilities of MEXSAT,” he said.

He also pointed out that the Mexican Space Program was created to strengthen space infrastructure, national security and digital inclusion.

In addition, he added, the training of technical and scientific talent will be promoted through technology transfer programs, for which he will maintain an open dialogue with the academic and scientific community.

He commented that, as part of the work plan and as announced by the President, Claudia Sheinbaum, a telecommunications satellite will be launched in geostationary orbit during the current administration to replace and complement the current services provided by the Bicentennial satellite.
