Trump suspends 25% tariffs

MEXICO - The President of the United States, Donald Trump, suspended for a month the 25% tariffs announced against Mexico.

The president informed on his social network Truth Social that he had a “very friendly conversation” with the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum.

Minutes before, the president had confirmed the agreement through a brief message published on the social network X, in which she announced that she committed to reinforce the border with the United States with 10,000 members of the National Guard who will be in charge of preventing drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl.

“It was a good conversation with President Trump with much respect for our relationship and sovereignty,” Sheinbaum wrote.

Canada's outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reported that after a phone call with President Trump, the 25% tariffs announced by the White House on Canadian goods were also suspended for 30 days.

Sheinbaum gave more details about the dialogue she had had with Trump in a press conference.

She said that her U.S. counterpart asked her how long she wanted to put these tariffs on hold, to which she replied, with a smile, “let's put them on hold forever.”

“I told him, well, let's put it on pause for a month and I am sure that in this month we are going to be able to give results, good results to your people, good results to the people of Mexico,” she added.

The United States, for its part, committed to work to prevent the trafficking of high-powered weapons to Mexico, the president said.

“For the first time the U.S. government says that we are going to work together to prevent high-powered weapons from entering Mexico,” she said.
