MEXICO - The Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader), Víctor Villalobos Arámbula, informed that the United States is the largest buyer of Mexican food, after purchasing US$42.1 billion in berries, avocado, tomato, mango, asparagus, chili, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, lemon, cucumber, beer and tequila last year.

The largest food purchases from the United States were for 31 foods produced in the countryside and manufactured in factories in Mexico, according to a press release from the agency.

During 2023, the North American country ranked first in the purchase of beer, grapes, tequila, berries, avocado, tomato, meat, confectionery, cookies, chili, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, beef cattle, lemon, sugar, nougat, chocolate, fried foods, cucumber, green coffee, infant formula, lettuce, mango, orange juice, puffed cereal, tuna, onion, asparagus and banana.

Japan was the largest buyer of Mexican pork in 2023, the year in which producers sold more than US$576 million worth of pork. This acquisition made this Asian nation the second largest buyer of Mexican food, with US$1.11 billion.

Canada is the third largest buyer of Mexican food with US$958 million, followed by Guatemala with US$629 million.

China is in fifth place with US$446 million, in sixth place is Spain with US$319 million, in seventh place is Colombia with US$257 million, and in eighth place is Germany with US$216 million.

Mexico recorded a surplus agricultural and agroindustrial balance in 2023, which reached a value of US$7.6 billion, the third highest positive balance in 29 years, according to the agency.

Mexico remained the leading country in the global trade of beer, tequila, berries, avocado, tomato, mango and asparagus, and the second in chili, broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower, lemon and cucumber, among others.
