Volkswagen celebrates 50 years building cars in Puebla

Volkswagen Puebla Assembly Plant celebrated last week 50 years of operations totaling 11 million units built at the facility and exporting cars to 100 countries, the company said in a press release.

It was in October 23rd 1967 when the firsts Volkswagen sedans started rolling out of the manufacturing complex for a total production of 17,630 vehicles during the first year. The facility reached its capacity peak in 2012 to more than 600,000 units.

The site, which has seen its size multiplied from the original 102,554 square-meter footprint to more than 1 million square meters, nowadays employs 9,700 unionized workers.

Besides the iconic VW Beetle, some other models that have been produced in Puebla are the Safari, Combi, Brasilia, Caribe (Golf A1), Golf, Jetta, Beetle and Tiguan.
