Aerospace industry to continue recovery in 2023: FEMIA

MEXICO - The Mexican Aerospace Industry Federation (Femia) reported that 2023 will continue to be a year of recovery in exports, due to increased economic activity and a better aviation scenario.

The executive president of Femia, Luis Lizcano, commented that there is sufficient reason to believe that the current year will continue on the path of increasing levels previous to the coronavirus pandemic.

The executive recalled that in 2019, before the health crisis, a figure of US$9.6 billion was recorded for aerospace exports; while in 2022 it was already close, with an amount of US$8.1 billion.

With this scenario, we foresee that it will be in 2023 when the industry will exceed pre-pandemic levels and thus continue to grow in the coming years.

The president of Femia, Luis Lizcano, explained that out of the 32 states in the country, 20 of them have companies in this sector, but most of them are concentrated in Sonora, Chihuahua, Nuevo León, Baja California and Querétaro.

The executive said that 80% of the parts manufactured in Mexico for the aviation sector are destined for the United States, followed by Canada with 4.7%, 3.5% for France and 3.2% for Germany.

"Among the new plans in the industry is our interest in the potential agreement of the Free Trade Agreement between Mexico and the United Kingdom, which would become an important market," he commented.

Luiz Lizcano informed that in view of this scenario, they have had a slight approach with officials of the Ministry of Economy to discuss this issue.

The executive stated that it is expected that in the coming years more states will join the list of aerospace parts producers and the figure will increase to 20 entities.
