Consolidating nearshoring, a big pending issue for Sheinbaum

MEXICO - The Ministry of Economy warned that two major pending issues that will remain for the administration of the virtual president-elect Claudia Sheinbaum will be to consolidate nearshoring and the revision of the USMCA.

"Consolidating nearshoring will be very important for the coming years, we have to invest in consolidating policies that have already started in this government, such as investment in public infrastructure that detonates private investment," said the undersecretary of foreign trade, Alejandro Encinas.

He said that the availability of natural resources is important, but also that there can be a sustainable use of resources; in addition, in the next administration it will be important to review the trade agreement in 2026.

"We have already started working groups with the private sector and internally, with the Mexican government team. So that, whatever happens, we will be better prepared for the 2026 negotiations," Encinas said.

He added that the transition team is also working ‘to hand over the baton and all the information’, both internal analysis and dialogue with the private sector.

The official also commented that before the end of the current administration, the agency is working on trade agreements, such as the one with the United Kingdom, which is in the process of being sent to the Senate.
