Mexican Automobile Dealerships Sold 4.6% Fewer Cars in April

The decrease in economic activity in the country due to Easter Week, together with other factors, caused the sale of new vehicles to register a 4.6% decrease during April, as compared to the same month last year.

According to Inegi data, in the fourth month of the year, 108,298 zero-kilometer units were sold at the country's distributors. However, the total volume of sales during the first four months of 2025 is 473,323 vehicles, which represents a marginal growth of 1.4%.

In this regard, Guillermo Rosales, executive president of the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA), said that these latest figures confirm the slowdown that the automotive market has been going through since the end of last year.

Among the automakers that reported positive results was Nissan, the market leader in terms of sales volume (17.9% of the total), with an increase of 6.3% due to the sale of 19,070 units, including those of its luxury brand Infiniti.

Japanese Mazda, sixth in market share (7.2%), reported an increase of 10.9% with the delivery of 7,937 units, while Ford registered an increase of 13.8% and the sale of 4,222 units.

MG Motor, the Chinese automaker with the highest sales volume in Mexico, sold 4,450 units in April, an increase of 42.3%.

Although the company surpassed Ford in its monthly sales figures, in the accumulated volume for the current year it remains in 10th place in terms of market share with 3.3% of the total.

Among the companies whose sales fell in April were General Motors, which sold 13.9% fewer units; Stellanties, with a decline of 11.7%; Toyota, with a drop of 7.8%; Hyundai, with -6.5%; Volkswagen, with -5.1%; and Kia, with -1%.

It should be noted that the Chirey and Jetour brands did not report their sales figures to Inegi in April, even though they had done so regularly in previous months.

In this regard, Rosales pointed out that there are several brands that do not share data on their commercial performance in the country, which distorts the total result of new car sales and makes it impossible to know with certainty the state of the local market.

Among these companies are several of Chinese origin, such as BYD, Zeekr and Geely, but there is also the American Tesla.
