Semiconductor chapter to be included in the USMCA

The Ministry of Economy informed that at the Semiconductor Cooperation Forum it was proposed to include a semiconductor chapter in the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
The United States has promoted and subsidized this industry in order to relocate production in its country and depend less on Asian imports, considering Mexico as a complementary country in the value chain.
In November 2024, the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, pledged his support to the Master Plan for the Development of the Semiconductor Industry in Mexico 2024-2030, which aims to double the semiconductor industry in Mexico by the end of the six-year term.
As part of this, Ebrard chaired the Follow-up Meeting of that Master Plan, where the progress of the initiative was evaluated and cooperation with strategic actors was strengthened.
“It was proposed to establish a specific chapter for semiconductors within the United States, Mexico and Canada Agreement (USMCA) with the vision of attracting investments from large production centers,” said the Ministry of Economy in a press release.
The plan is being promoted by the U.S.-Mexico Semiconductor Collaboration Forum, a binational grouping that brings together leading companies, U.S. Embassy officials, members of some 20 industry-related associations and academics from both countries.
