Mexico & the US meet to review the USMCA

Edgar Amador Zamora, Secretary of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP), held a meeting with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to continue strengthening bilateral cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking and the exchange of information to curb operations involving illicit funds.

The SHCP noted that during the meeting, officials discussed the ongoing negotiations between the two nations regarding the review of the USMCA.

“In this context, it was reaffirmed that cooperation between both countries is based on unrestricted respect for Mexico’s sovereignty, prioritizing an institutional, coordinated, and constructive dialogue that strengthens the integrity of financial systems, without undermining the powers and decisions that belong exclusively to the Mexican government,” Bessent said.

The first formal review of the USMCA will take place during the first half of 2026, although formal negotiations between Mexico and the United States began in mid-March to evaluate the treaty six years after its entry into force.
