“USMCA goes beyond trade”

“Energy integration between Mexico and the United States is structural and strategic, so the review of the USMCA will go far beyond trade and tariffs, as it will incorporate additional priorities—not only in the energy sector, but also in legal certainty and security,” said Larry Rubin, president of the American Society of Mexico (AMSOC).

Given that 70% of the natural gas Mexico consumes comes from the United States, US companies in the energy sector are interested in investing in the country, making legal certainty essential in Mexico.

“Mexico cannot develop energy fields on its own; it absolutely needs to partner with US companies if it wants to make progress in the energy sector. Energy companies are interested, but they seek that legal certainty—that contracts are set in stone. After billions of dollars in investment, you can’t just say the rules are changing now,” Rubin added.

The review and renegotiation of the USMCA is a priority for the thousands of companies participating in AMSOC; it is and will remain a priority to maintain it, make necessary changes, and follow up on priority issues that have not been resolved or policies that have not yet been implemented.
