The one-millionth Nissan Frontier pickup truck rolled off the assembly line in Canton, Mississippi, marking the Japanese automaker’s achievement of two million units produced of that model in the United States.
Production of the midsize pickup truck in the United States dates back to 1998, with the official launch of the program at the manufacturing facility in Smyrna, Tennessee, from where production was moved to Canton in 2012.
Currently, the vehicle is equipped with a 3.8-liter V6 engine manufactured at the powertrain plant in Decherd, Tennessee.
Nissan recently canceled plans to convert the facility into an electric vehicle hub, opting instead to develop a new platform based on body-on-frame architecture, which will be used to produce up to five models for the U.S. market.
Notable among these products is the return of the Xterra off-road SUV—a more rugged version of the Pathfinder that will be sold alongside the current model—as well as a midsize pickup truck for the Mitsubishi brand.
