Jalisco Gains a Competitive Edge with Natural Gas

Jalisco appears to have resolved its energy issues across its various sectors and also enjoys a competitive advantage thanks to access to natural gas from Waha, Texas, according to Manuel Herrera Vega, head of the Secretariat of Sustainable Energy Development (SEDES).

The official emphasized that during the first semester of 2026, the entity had recorded the lowest natural gas rates in the last decade, due to gas prices on the Waha market, which were negative during the first quarter.

“In Jalisco, we have access to the cheapest natural gas in the world,” said Herrera Vega, who noted that the state has a pipeline that runs directly from Waha, crossing the state, in addition to the infrastructure developed to distribute this energy source.

He explained that natural gas offers an advantage for companies because it is generally more efficient and less polluting, and is less expensive than LP gas and other hydrocarbons.

The secretary emphasized that, despite expectations of disruptions in the gas supply due to international conflicts, Mexico has maintained a privileged position in terms of U.S. energy access, particularly in Jalisco.

The official noted that access to natural gas is linked to electricity generation; he also mentioned that one of the advances in the new legislation currently allows users to generate their own energy and obtain the necessary permits quickly.

“I can tell you with complete confidence that today, in Jalisco, we have resolved the energy issue—obviously in different ways,” he pointed out.
