The electronics industry is becoming a driving force behind exports

The electronics industry stands out as one of the main drivers of growth in Mexico’s export manufacturing sector, against a backdrop of the relocation of supply chains, technological transformation, and the search for new markets, according to Guillermo del Rio Ochoa, president of the Western Chapter of the Association of Maquiladora and Export Manufacturing Industries (INDEX).

The business leader, whose goal is to chair the national INDEX with a vision for 2030, noted that the electronics industry has surpassed the automotive industry in manufacturing exports; therefore, he explained, one of the objectives should be to capitalize on this trend to enhance national collaboration within supply chains.

"The export industry is one of the strongest pillars of the Mexican economy, and it is also one of the sectors most exposed to all the changes taking place in the global environment. With the USMCA review coming up and the IMMEX 4.0 program on the horizon, the need to develop a larger domestic supply chain in Mexico—and what we have to do is not wait for these things to happen, but rather push for them to happen in a way that benefits the industry and at the pace that is required,” he said.

It reports that Mexican exports reached a record high of US$664.8 billion in 2025, a year-over-year increase of 7.6%, with manufactured goods accounting for 91.6% of the total, while automotive exports totaled US$185.7 billion, a figure that represented a 4.2% decline.

In contrast, the rest of the manufacturing sector—which accounts for a large part of economic activity—reached US$423 billion, a 17.3% year-over-year increase, according to figures presented by the leader.

For Del Rio Ochoa, this trend presents an opportunity for Mexico to increase its participation in more technology-intensive industries, particularly through the development of domestic supply chains and the advancement of companies within value chains.
