Maritime Vehicle Traffic Declines 2.8%
The volume of vehicles transported by sea in deep-sea traffic fell by 2.8% in the first half of the year, dropping from 1,403,804 units in the same period of 2025 to 1,364,178 units.
The trend differed between the two port regions under consideration. In the Pacific region, 550,907 vehicles passed through in 2026. Meanwhile, In the Gulf-Caribbean region, traffic fell to 813,271 vehicles, representing a 1.0% decline.
In the foreign trade sector, imports totaled 625,128 vehicles in 2026, Exports reached 739,050 units.
Within the Pacific region, Mazatlán handled 90,251 vehicles from January through August 2026, all of which were imports. Ázaro Cárdenas registered 457,656 vehicles in 2026. During the reporting period, imports totaled 344,947, while exports decreased to 126,722. Salina Cruz saw one of the largest percentage increases during the period. The port went from 900 vehicles in 2025 to 3,000 in 2026, an increase of 233.3%.
Pacific ports recorded 425,660 imported vehicles in 2026. Meanwhile, exports fell to 125,247 units. The total was 550,907 vehicles.
In the Gulf-Caribbean region, Veracruz accounted for the largest volume of traffic among the listed ports. Between January and August 2026, it handled 513,490 vehicles. Imports in Veracruz rose from 175,255 to 193,636 vehicles, while exports rose to 312,584. Altamira, for its part, registered 271,288 vehicles in 2026, a decrease of 11.5%. Imports fell to 7,409 units, and exports totaled 299,031. Tuxpan processed 25,493 vehicles in 2026, a change of -4.0%, with no imports recorded, while exports increased from 23,277. Meanwhile, Coatzacoalcos recorded 3,000 in 2026, an increase of 233.3%.
The Gulf-Caribbean port system handled 199,468 imported vehicles in 2026, In terms of exports, the volume fell to 613,803 units. The regional total was 813,271 vehicles.
