Manzanillo Port Container Throughput Rises 9.5%

In the first nine months of the year, container throughput at the Port of Manzanillo increased by 9.5% year over year to nearly 3.155 million TEUs.

The port handles nearly 45% of Mexico's total maritime container traffic.

The increase was driven mainly by exports, which rose 14% during the period and accounted for 44% of total container throughput. Imports represented 41%, while transshipments—the transfer of cargo from one vessel to another—accounted for the remaining 15%.

According to the monthly statistical report published by the National Port System Administration (Asipona), containerized cargo accounted for approximately 75% of Manzanillo's total commercial cargo volume by weight. Mineral bulk cargo represented 15%, agricultural bulk cargo 6%, and general cargo 5%. General cargo consists of goods transported individually, such as in sacks, tubes, and boxes.

From January through September, commercial cargo totaled nearly 23.514 million metric tons, a 5.4% increase compared with the same period in the previous year.

The port also received 1,306 vessels, a 6% increase compared with the same period in 2025. Of these, 1,180 carried commercial cargo and 126 transported petroleum products. A total of 894 vessels, representing 76% of those carrying commercial cargo, transported containers.

A total of 23 shipping lines served the Port of Manzanillo. The lines handling the highest container volumes, measured in TEUs, were Japan's Ocean Network Express (ONE), Germany's Hapag-Lloyd, Switzerland-based Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), Denmark's Maersk, and France's CMA CGM.
