Auto dealers in Mexico sold 114,653 new light vehicles during September, down 1.5% compared to 116,356 units delivered in the same month of last year. The balance was negative despite the fact that auto sales were unusually low in September 2017 due to the two earthquakes that shook the central region of the country during that month.
Total sales from January through September are now of 1,028,379 vehicles, which represents a 7.1% drop compared to the 1,106,848 units sold during the same 9-month period of 2017.
Starting this month Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) will be responsible for compiling and publishing sales, production and exports data of the automotive industry in the country, but those will be raw figures without a comparative basis.
By comparing the new figures from the Inegi to those published by the Mexican Auto Industry Association (AMIA) in September 2017 results in a 10.1% loss for Nissan, which sold 25,324 vehicles last month. Those figures do not include sales from its premium brand Infiniti, which posted a 13% gain to 179 units.
Second best selling automaker was General Motors, whose 18,799 vehicles delivered represent a 4% increase. GM figures include sales of its Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac and Buick brands.
Volkswagen made third on the ranking with 12,437 units sold, a 15.6% drop compared to September 2017. VW’s figures do not include sales of its subsidiaries SEAT, Porsche and Audi.
The list goes on with Toyota whose 8,243 vehicles sold represent a 9.7% gain and KIA which posted a 6.7% increase on sales of 8,005 vehicles.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, whose sales figures in Mexico include those from the Mitsubishi brand, posted 12.4% decline to 7,485 vehicles. On the other hand, Honda saw its sales increase 2.1% to 5,821 vehicles.
Meanwhile, Ford posted a 26.6% loss to 4,914 units. Ford’s figures do not include sales of its premium brand Lincoln, which posted a 21.6% gain on sales of 152 vehicles.
Among the main automakers with operations in Mexico, Mazda was the best performing brand regarding sales volume during September with a 21.9% gain on 4,738 deliveries. The Japanese automaker was followed by Hyundai on sales of 4,105 units, although it represented a marginal gain of just 0.1% equivalent to 5 vehicles more than a year before.
In the premium market all three major brands posted two-digit growths. Mercedes-Benz led the ranking with a skyrocketing 53.5% increase on sales of 2,232 vehicles, followed by BMW which posted a gain of 49.8% to 1,655 units. Meanwhile Audi saw its sales hike 24.6% to 1,237 vehicles.
