On Thursday, French advanced materials manufacturer Saint-Gobain officially opened its jumbo coater located at the Cuautla industrial park, in the municipality of Cuautla, Morelos.
This production line is used to manufacture layered glass for automotive and building applications that features 6 times more thermal insulation capacity.
According to Saint-Gobain, the jumbo coater will allow the production of high-performance glass panels over 19 feet high, which is the largest product available in the Americas.
The company invested US$35 million and recruited more than 200 workers in order to star operations. The facility has an output capacity of 5 million square meters per year, but during 2019 it will operate just at 40%.
Dominique Azem, Saint-Gobain CEO for Mexico, said that it is the first time that a company has brought such an investment to Mexico, since previously all the glass with the aforementioned characteristics was imported from the United States and Europe.
However, with the launch of the jumbo coater, Mexico will now become an exporter of high-performance glass for North and South America.
Saint-Gobain operates 10 production sites in the country. Three of them are in Morelos and the rest in the states of Tlaxcala, San Luis Potosi, Coahuila, Baja California and Tamaulipas, where in addition to glass manufactures construction materials, technical textiles and abrasives.
