Auto sales in Mexico drop 6.4% in July
Auto dealers sold 114,312 new vehicles in Mexico last month, 6.4% less cars than those sold in July of 2017. This is the fourteenth month in a row with sales decline. Sales from January through July totaled 795,011 units, which represents an 8.1% drop compared to the same seven-month period of 2017, according to figures from the Mexican Association of Auto Dealers (AMDA for its acronym in Spanish).
“Auto dealers keep facing adverse conditions due to the loss of purchasing power by consumers of subcompact cars and rising interest rates,” said Guillermo Rosales, head of AMDA. “We hope that at the end of the year there will be better confidence among consumers to drive up demand and lessen the fall.”
The AMDA estimated its members would market 1.45 million units in 2018.
Nissan, the best-selling brand in Mexico with a 22.4% market share on a year-to-date basis, saw its sales sink 14.2% to 24,240 vehicles. Its sales in the first seven months of the year totaled 178,062 units, representing a 15.9% decrease.
Although its July sales totaled just 181 units, Nissan’s premium brand Infiniti posted a 42.5% increase in monthly sales and a 10.1% hike to 1,228 units in a year-to-date basis.
General Motors, second best-selling automaker in Mexico with a 15.6% market share, posted a marginal gain of 1.1% on July sales of 19,916 cars and light trucks. Its year-to-date sales totaled 124,045 units which represents a 13.2% drop.
Volkswagen, ranking third place with a 13.9% market share, posted a 21.6% drop in sales of 16,192 units. Year-to-date sales by the German automaker totaled 110,219 vehicles, down 19.3%. Volkswagen sales figures include those of its Audi, Porsche and Seat brands.
Toyota sold 8,198 vehicles in July for a 4.5% increase. The Japanese automaker remained as the fourth best-selling brand in Mexico with a 7.6% market share. Its year-to-date sales totaled 60,146 units, which represents a 1.7% increase compared to the first seven months of 2017.
KIA, fifth best-selling brand in the country with a 6.7% market share, saw its sales increase 3.5% to 7,508 vehicles. The Korean automaker’s year-to-date sales totaled 52,976 vehicles, which represents a 9.7% increase.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, which holds a 6.4% market share, sold 7,177 vehicles in July, 15.2% down compared to same month of the previous year. Its year-to-date sales dropped 10.5% to 50,887 units.
Honda posted a 4% increase in sales to 6,879 vehicles, while its year-to-date deliveries were of 50,407 units, 0.1% up. Honda figures do not include those of its premium brand Acura, which sold 110 vehicles in July and totaled 941 in the first sven months of 2018, representing drops of 31.3% and 20.4% respectively.
Ford Motor Co. (5.2% market share) sold 5,592 units in July for total year-to-date sales of 41,194 vehicles, representing decreases of 16.9% and 12.1% respectively. Ford figures do not include those of its Lincoln brand, which marketed 135 units last month for total year-to-date sales of 1,112 vehicles, figures that represent double-digit hikes of 25% and 33% respectively.
Mazda sales increased 11.9% in June to 5,009 vehicles. Its year-to-date sales of 31,302 units represent a 5.8% gain in the first seven months of 2018.
KIA’s sister brand, Hyundai posted a two-digit increase of 22.9% to 4,101 vehicles. Its year-to-date sales totaled 28,737 cars and SUVs, representing a 20.2% hike.
In the premium market, BMW posted a 13.8% hike in sales of 1,630 vehicles. Its year-to-date sales were of 11,172 vehicles for a 20.1% boost.
Mercedes-Benz also saw its monthly sales hike 19.3% to 1,323 vehicles, for total year-to-date sales of 10,511 units, 10.2% up. It’s worth noting that the German automaker does not report sales of certain high-end SUVs since November 2012 concerning security reasons.
Audi sold 1,325 cars and SUVs for total year-to-date sales of 8,268 units, representing increases of 22.7% and 2.6% respectively.
