Avocado could cost US$6.77 per kilo

MEXICO – The price of avocado is projected to reach maximums of two years ago, when the so-called green gold was US$6.77 per kilo; situation in which chicken is also found since the kilogram of said product is already sold in more than US$5.21.

Data from the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) indicate that, in the week of June 17 to 21, the price of one kilo of avocado reached up to US$4.17 in the country's markets; however, the president of the Association of Producers and Packers Exporters of Avocado of Mexico (Apeam), Gabriel Villaseñor, stated that before the low production because of the harvest season, the price will continue to increase and reach US$6.77, as happened in 2017.

According to information from national media, such as Milenio and El Universal, the Apeam leader pointed out that there is no fruit, and that due to the effects of supply and demand, prices rose, and they will decrease until there is more product. He predicted that it will be until the last weeks of July, or early August, when the flow and price of avocado will begin to normalize.

By announcing inflation in the first half of May, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) pointed out that among the foods that increased their prices the most during the first half of this month, were avocados as well as chicken, chayote, orange, green tomato and pork.
