BMW Group to produce electric vehicles and high-voltage batteries in SLP

The BMW Group's San Luis Potosí plant has a long-term production strategy. Starting in 2027 it will produce electric vehicles and high-voltage batteries with a focus on sustainability, Elizabeth Arreguin, Corporate Communications Manager, told El Economista.
“The plant currently produces the BMW 3 Series, as well as the M2 and 2 Series Coupe, the latter built exclusively in Mexico and exported to customers around the world. Starting in 2027, the plant will produce electric vehicles and high-voltage batteries,” she noted.
Arreguin recalled that the company made an investment of US$1.5 billion for the construction of the San Luis Potosí Plant in 2016, with a Talent Campus that was inaugurated in 2017 and whose production officially began in 2019. They currently have 3,700 employees.
It is worth mentioning that on March 5 last year, BMW Group made it known that they have planned local production of high-voltage batteries for the NEUE KLASSE electric car platform at five assembly sites worldwide for the sixth-generation high-voltage batteries.
“High-voltage battery production in San Luis Potosi will be part of our global production network for the new sixth-generation e-drive. For that we are building five sites on three continents,” indicated Milan Nedeljković, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Production.
In March 2024, the company mentioned that in 2027 it will start production at the San Luis Potosí plant of the Sports Activity Vehicle, which will have a surface area of 80,000 square meters and is key to the implementation of the NEUE KLASSE in Mexico.
The company has mentioned that its vision focuses on flexibility, innovation and efficiency.
“In addition, we are committed to implementing cutting-edge processes in the production of automobiles, but also in measures to reduce water and energy consumption,” Elizabeth Arreguín said,
“Some of the measures we are implementing, 100% of the electricity comes from photovoltaic sources, we operate with a zero waste to landfill policy and we treat the total amount of water used in all production (services) and in the Paint Shop,” she said.
