Grupo Modelo opens US$756-million brewery to produce foreign brands

Grupo Modelo, a subsidiary of AB InBev, inaugurated in the municipality of Apán, Hidalgo its eighth brewing plant in the country to which the company allocated a US$756-million investment.
According to the company, the plant is shaping up to be the second largest in the world by production volume, with an initial output capacity of 12 million hectoliters and the possibility of expanding to 24 million, just behind another Grupo Modelo brewery, located in Zacatecas, which already produces 24 million hectoliters annually.
This figure is equivalent to producing 19 million beers in a day or filling an Olympic pool in one hour.
“We are going to produce practically the entire portfolio of Modelo, Victoria, Corona, Modelo Especial, and the international ones as well, Stella Artois and Michelob Ultra,” detailed Cassiano de Stefano, president of Grupo Modelo.
The executive stressed that during the construction phase of the plant, more than 4,500 direct jobs were generated, and that 600 permanent employees have been hired so far. It is estimated that 1,200 direct jobs will be created when the plant runs at full capacity.
The added that the brewery will process around 165 tons of barley daily and 60% of that input purchased in the region will come from the state of Hidalgo.
According to research firm Euromonitor International, Grupo Modelo is the leading brewer in Mexico with a 57.3% market share followed by Cervecería Cuauhtemoc Moctezuma, a subsidiary of Heineken, which holds a 40.4% share.
