Lucid Releases First Images of the Cosmos Crossover

Lucid submitted the first public images to date of its midsize Cosmos crossover—scheduled to debut later this year—to European intellectual property regulators, according to the Dutch automotive website Autoweek.

To maintain secrecy, the documents show simple schematics that do not mention the word “Cosmos”; they were also filed under the name Atieva Inc., the original name of the startup that gave rise to the California-based premium electric car manufacturer.

However, the Lucid brand name is clearly legible on both the front and rear of the vehicle.

In addition, several specialized media outlets have already confirmed that the crossover is very similar to the prototype that Lucid unveiled in New York earlier this year to investors behind closed doors—a prototype that photographers were not allowed to photograph.

Simply put, the Cosmos looks like a compact version of the Lucid Gravity, with a similar forward-swept cabin design, but it stands out with a more prominent front emblem than the SUV that apparently inspired it.

The company revealed at the time that the vehicle’s aerodynamics will allow it to achieve a drag coefficient of 0.22 and a projected range of more than 300 miles (480 kilometers).

Its 800-volt architecture will allow it to add 320 kilometers of range with just 14 minutes of charging—outperforming its rivals—and it will be compatible with technologies such as bidirectional vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging.

With a starting price of around $50,000, Lucid aims to add a product to its portfolio with massive potential to expand its market share.

However, the task will not be easy. The Lucid Cosmos will have to compete with ambitious offerings from rivals such as the Tesla Model Y, the segment’s imminent leader, and the Rivian R2, whose first deliveries began just a few days ago.
