Mexico Launches Ambitious Space Program

Mexico has launched an ambitious national space strategy aimed at strengthening its technological sovereignty, expanding internet access, and developing domestic satellite infrastructure over the next five years.

The newly introduced Mexican Space Program 2026–2030 outlines a roadmap for advancing the country's space capabilities through telecommunications satellites, Earth observation systems, and greater participation in the global space economy. The initiative will be coordinated by the Agency for Digital Transformation and Telecommunications, with technical support from the Mexican Space Agency.

A key component of the program is the development of a new national telecommunications satellite designed to improve connectivity in rural and underserved regions where traditional infrastructure remains limited. Officials view satellite technology as a strategic tool to reduce the digital divide and provide critical communications services across the country.

The plan also includes the deployment of Earth observation satellites to support environmental monitoring, disaster management, territorial planning, and data collection. In addition, the government aims to strengthen domestic expertise in satellite design, operation, and space-related technologies.

Authorities believe the initiative will help position Mexico as a more active player in the rapidly expanding global space sector, which is being driven by lower launch costs, satellite miniaturization, and growing demand for connectivity services. The strategy seeks to transform the country from a consumer of space technologies into a developer of its own capabilities.

Beyond connectivity, the program is expected to support industrial development, innovation, and talent formation, while creating opportunities for collaboration between government agencies, universities, research centers, and private companies.
