Several foreign manufacturers with operations in Mexico have announced contributions to the Mexican Red Cross and others institutions that provide assistance to those affected by a series of earthquakes that struck Mexico in September.
Mitsubishi Electric Corporation announced that the Mitsubishi Electric Group will donate approximately US$ 132,000 to aid victims and support recovery efforts. The donation will include contributions from three affiliates located in Mexico, MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC DE MEXICO, S.A. DE C.V., Mitsubishi Electric Automotive de Mexico, S.A. de C.V. and MELCO Logistics de Mexico, S.A. de C.V.
The Mitsubishi Electric Group expressed its deepest sympathies to all those affected by the disaster and extended its very sincerest wishes for a speedy recovery.
German auto supplier Continental announced a donation of more than US$ 50,000 to support the relief efforts. In addition, Continental employees in North America were encouraged to donate money to benefit this cause and this amount will be matched by the company.
"It was with great dismay that we learned of the devastating earthquake in Mexico and our thoughts are with those who were affected by its aftermath," said Dr. Elmar Degenhart, Executive Board Chairman and CEO of Continental. "We have a strong presence in Mexico and want to do our part in helping with the local relief efforts."
Continental has more than 23,000 employees in Mexico, which amounts to 10% of its global employee base, at 20 different facilities throughout Mexico, including development and manufacturing locations for all five divisions. Despite the severity of the earthquake, Continental facilities were only minimally impacted.
The DENSO North America Foundation (DNAF), the philanthropic arm of automotive technology, systems and components manufacturer, DENSO, announced it will donate US$ 50,000 to the Mexican Red Cross. DNAF has now donated US$ 200,000 in 2017 to disaster relief efforts in Mexico and the U.S. Gulf Coast following a string of earthquakes and hurricanes across the region.
“Our thoughts are with all of those affected by this catastrophe,” said Doug Patton, DNAF president and executive vice president of Engineering at DENSO International America. “We’ll continue to join with communities across North America to provide assistance.”
Honeywell announced a donation of US$ 400,000 in personal protective equipment (PPE) to the Mexico Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional (SEDENA) to support rescue and relief efforts.
Honeywell Safety and Productivity Solutions (SPS) provided nearly 50,000 pieces of safety equipment to be used by SEDENA and volunteer teams digging through the rubble of toppled city buildings.
Organized by Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the company’s corporate citizenship initiative, in partnership with SPS, the donations included respiratory and hearing protection, protective eye, face and footwear, fall protection, hard hats and safety gloves.
“We appreciate the immediate support from Honeywell,” said Brigadier General Jose Luis Chinas Silva of SEDENA. “The protective gear is crucial in our efforts to find and rescue citizens as quickly as possible. Every minute counts.”
Honeywell has 17,500 employees in manufacturing, engineering centers and offices across Mexico, including nearly 900 employees in Mexico City.
