Grupo Modelo opens US$60-million malt production line in Zacatecas

Grupo Modelo, the Mexican subsidiary of global brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev, announced the opening of an additional line for the production of malt in Calera de Victor Rosales, Zacatecas, which represents an investment of US$60 million.
In a statement, the company explained that this project will allow to increase its malt production capacity by 135%, going from 78,000 tons to 183,000 per year.
“The new malting plant will allow Grupo Modelo to maintain its leadership in domestic brewing production in the largest plant in the world,” the company said in a statement.
Furthermore, the company explained that in addition to the purchase of barley, producers will benefit from programs to introduce new varieties of grain, technifications of the crop, without leaving aside the support of the government to boost planting.
“Grupo Modelo maintains a business scheme in which it becomes an active partner in a value chain of producers, authorities, collaborators and the community,” said José Luis Taylor, director of Sustainability and Agribusiness for the company. “In this way, the production, distribution and sale of our products guarantee the growth of all those involved through a model that encourages responsible consumption and the optimization of natural resources.”
Currently, the company owns two malting plants in Mexico with a capacity to process 360,000 tons of malt per year, located in Tlaxcala and Zacatecas.
