Musk halts Tesla plant in Mexico
NUEVO LEON - Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the company's investment in Mexico is on hold at least until the US presidential election.
‘I think we have to see what happens with the election. Trump has said he will put tariffs on vehicles produced in Mexico. So it doesn't make sense to invest a lot in Mexico if that's going to happen,’ Musk said.
Tesla had previously announced the construction of an assembly plant in Mexico to produce cars from 2026.
Musk, who has publicly declared his support for Trump and pledged to donate tens of millions of dollars to his campaign to make it easier for him to win the presidential election in November, added: ‘Right now we oppose Giga Mexico.’
‘We need to see how things develop politically,’ he continued.
Tesla had begun construction work on the Mexico Gigafactory in Monterrey and even in February of this year, the governor of Nueva Leon, Samuel Garcia, assured that work would begin in March of this year.
The controversial entrepreneur also said that Tesla is ramping up production at its existing factories and that future products, such as the robotaxi or the humanoid robot it calls Optimus, will be produced at the company's Texas plant.
