National Defense: New logistics & transportation acquisitions

Secretary of National Defense Ricardo Trevilla Trejo confirmed that the federal government is considering new acquisitions to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Mexican Air Force, with a strategy that will prioritize transport aircraft and helicopters during the current administration.

At a press conference, the general explained that these acquisitions are part of a comprehensive development plan designed for the Army, the Air Force, and the National Guard, whose purpose is to maintain both personnel and equipment used by the Armed Forces in optimal condition.

As he explained, the strategy includes short-, medium-, and long-term actions, with a projection extending through the year 2050.

“We have already mapped out all the acquisitions that need to be made, and, speaking of aircraft, the priority is on cargo aircraft, personnel transport aircraft, and helicopters,” he said.

One of the topics addressed during the conference was the future of the Northrop F-5E/F fighter jets, aircraft that have been part of the Mexican combat fleet for four decades. Projects related to fighter aircraft will be developed gradually as part of a strategy that will extend beyond the current administration.

With this program, the federal government seeks to strengthen the Mexican Air Force’s logistics, transport, and emergency response capabilities, while moving forward with a modernization strategy that includes phased investments and the eventual renewal of part of its current fleet.
